Be Responsible

Bentley
     Responsible

The third strand of our CSR programme ‘Be Responsible’ refers to our responsibility for the environment at a local and global level. It covers our commitment to take proactive steps
to minimise any negative impacts and to ensure we capitalise on opportunities to make a positive environmental difference.

2010/11 has seen a strong and successful focus on better measuring our environmental impact and identifying areas where we have the most opportunity to make a positive impact. Together with establishing and working towards clear objectives and targets for environmental performance, we have reviewed and built upon our Environmental Management procedures and further developed our Environmental Audit, Incident and Waste Reporting processes.

2011 saw more work go into accurately measuring and reporting on the waste we generate. Our Buying Department has continued to work closely with our waste management suppliers to achieve accurate monthly figures. Analysis in January 2012 shows that we achieved a 97% diversion from landfill rate, which is far in excess of the current industry target of 50%.

When turnover is factored in, waste generated (excluding soils - over which we have little influence) decreased from 2010 levels of 7.48t/£100k to 5.96t/£100k in 2011 - a reduction of 20%.

Full details on our waste calculations are available here.

As with our health and safety programme, we actively encourage our employees to report on near miss incidents, enabling us to learn from such events and prevent more serious incidents occurring.  Environmental awareness has increased significantly year on year, with Environmental Near Miss reporting up by 84% in 2011 (when compared with 2010), an indicator of our strong and improving ‘green’ culture.

Our ISO accredited Environmental Management System (EMS) is designed to help us continuously improve our environmental performance.  Our Environmental Policy describes the principal elements of our EMS and demonstrates our commitment to effective environmental management.  The policy also describes the arrangements and procedures for environmental control and provides the basis for a systematic and uniform approach to the management of environmental issues.

In 2011 we achieved our highest ever environmental score in the UVDB Verify Audit, which assesses our environmental management system and procedures on site. Our overall score of over 96% is significantly higher than the national average. We also retained our ISO 14001 accreditation, receiving extremely positive comments from the auditor.

We have continued to reaffirm our pledges every year since May 2008 to commit to reducing our organisation's carbon footprint.  Having reported our progress against these pledges, we are delighted to be allowed to use The Prince's May Day Network logo for the fourth year running.

JN Bentley also completes Business in the Community's annual Environment Index.  Details can be found here
