Responsible
We are committed to operating in an environmentally responsible manner and believe that responsible stewardship of both the natural and the built environment is essential for business efficiency and success. We not only accept our responsibility to protect the environment but commit to enhancing it through our work whenever possible.
As with our Health & Safety programme, we actively encourage our employees to report on near miss incidents, enabling us to learn from such events and prevent more serious incidents occurring. Our aim is to have zero environmental incidents and we're delighted that we had none to report in 2008.
We also encourage our employees to be more aware of their impact on the environment. By providing extensive recycling facilities in offices and producing posters that remind workers of how to deal with spills and waste on sites, we are keen to encourage our employees to Bentley Responsible for the environment too.
Our ISO accredited Environmental Management System (EMS) is designed to help us continuously improve our environmental performance. Our Environmental Policy describes the principal elements of our EMS and demonstrates our commitment to effective environmental management.
The policy also describes the arrangements and procedures for environmental control and provides the basis for a systematic and uniform approach to the management of environmental issues.
It also recognises that any materials and services we purchase and any activities we undertake must comply with the requirements of current legislation and contract specifications as well as our own environmental targets and objectives.
In January 2009, we completed Business in the Community's Environment Index (Yorkshire & Humber Region) for the first time and were delighted to receive a certificate for the achievement of Highest Scoring New Entrant. We are now developing a set of actions that will enable us to move up the Index rankings next year.
In May 2009, we attended The Prince's May Day Summit for the second time and have continued to re-affirm our pledges made in May 2008, to commit to reducing our organisation's carbon. As a result of reporting back the progress made so far against these pledges, we are delighted to have been allowed use of The Prince's May Day Network logo for the second year running.
