History

JN Bentley was founded with offices in Skipton, North Yorkshire, in 1972.

Initially it was principally involved in water and sewerage works for the water authorities in Bradford and Craven and civil engineering works for local authorities in Yorkshire and East Lancashire.

This laid the foundations of the civil engineering activities of the Company and its historic association with the water industry.

1980s

During the 1980s we added building construction to our range of services with the completion of many successful industrial building projects. JN Bentley was something of a pioneer in providing both design and build services to clients in-house.

Between 1985 and 1995 the Company completed two ambitious, high profile residential development projects.  The first was at Linton, near Grassington, North Yorkshire and the other at Cowan Head, near Kendal, in the Lake District.

1990s

The 1990s saw a more civil engineering focused business once again, particularly through a strengthening relationship with Yorkshire Water, and we also developed core skills in the solid waste sector.

The geographic range of our activities was extended across the north of England, with a focus on blue chip and local government clients. We continued to develop expertise in design and construction, which in the water industry included process, mechanical and electrical design, installation and commissioning.

2000s

In 1999 we formed a joint venture with consultant Mott MacDonald, specifically to offer an integrated feasibility, design, construction and commissioning service. Mott MacDonald Bentley (MMB) has flourished in the years since its formation, and now represents a significant proportion of JN Bentley's turnover.

The 2000s have seen geographic diversification of our activities with offices opening in Durham in 2005 and Shifnal, Shropshire, in 2009.

2010+

We also established a Yorkshire Water Contract Office in Leeds in 2010 and continue to co-locate with Essex & Suffolk Water at Hanningfield Water Treatment Works.

We also co-loated with Cambridge Water in offices until 2013.

2013 saw the formation of JBA Bentley, a joint venture between ourselves and environmental and water engineering consultancy Jeremy Benn Associates.  JBA Bentley's contract with the Environment Agency is serviced from new premises acquired in Leeds City Centre.

Operations in the North West are now managed from offices in Skelmersdale, where we work closely with client United Utilities, and we now co-locate with client Anglian Water in Peterborough too.

Following a number of successful AMP6 contract wins and renewals, in 2014, Mott MacDonald acquired its UK water industry design and build joint venture partner Bentley Holdings Ltd (which includes its subsidiary company JN Bentley Ltd), a natural progression in the highly successful 15 year partnership between the companies through MMB.
