HistoryJN Bentley was founded with offices in Skipton, North Yorkshire, in 1972. Initially it was principally involved in water and sewerage works for the water authorities in Bradford and Craven and civil engineering works for local authorities in Yorkshire and East Lancashire. This laid the foundations of the civil engineering activities of the Company and its historic association with the water industry. During the 1980s we added building construction to our range of services with the completion of many successful industrial building projects. JN Bentley was something of a pioneer in providing both design and build services to clients in-house. Between 1985 and 1995 the Company completed two ambitious, high profile residential development projects. The first was at Linton, near Grassington, North Yorkshire and the other at Cowan Head, near Kendal, in the Lake District. The 1990s saw a more civil engineering focused business once again, particularly through a strengthening relationship with Yorkshire Water, and we also developed core skills in the solid waste sector. The geographic range of our activities was extended across the north of England, with a focus on blue chip and local government clients. We continued to develop expertise in design and construction, which in the water industry included process, mechanical and electrical design, installation and commissioning. In 1999 we formed a joint venture with consultant Mott MacDonald, specifically to offer an integrated feasibility, design, construction and commissioning service. Mott MacDonald Bentley has flourished in the 8 years since formation, and now represents around two-thirds of JN Bentley's turnover. The 2000s have seen geographic diversification of our activities with offices opening in Bradford and Durham (2005), and in Newark (2007). Colleagues are also co-located with client teams in Northallerton, Doncaster and Warrington. We operate long-term capital frameworks in the water and solid waste sectors and enjoys long-term relationships with several blue-chip commercial clients. Work for local government clients also continues both in building (Building Schools for the Future and ProCure 21) and in civil engineering.
